Eliade does not present his side of the story well in his allegedly epic， life altering， earth shattering romance（as depicted by him，not me）。 When I first learnt about it， I was greatly intrigued by the real life affair between a upper caste educated girl from a scholarly yet conservative family and a Romanian writer。 However Eliade fetisizes， sexulizes and dumbs down maitreyi and presents her both as naive and extremely impassioned and lustful and not in a nice manner。 I cannot find a hindi or Eliade does not present his side of the story well in his allegedly epic， life altering， earth shattering romance（as depicted by him，not me）。 When I first learnt about it， I was greatly intrigued by the real life affair between a upper caste educated girl from a scholarly yet conservative family and a Romanian writer。 However Eliade fetisizes， sexulizes and dumbs down maitreyi and presents her both as naive and extremely impassioned and lustful and not in a nice manner。 I cannot find a hindi or english translation for Na Hanyate ， in which maitreyi devi writes her version of the events。 Please let me know where I can find it 🙏 。。。more

লা নুই বেঙ্গলী তথা বাংলার রাত এর নাম অনেক শুনেছি। এ ব্যাপারে যা জানতাম তা হলো， মির্চা এলিয়াদ অর্থাৎ এ বইয়ের লেখক কর্মসূত্রে তার উধ্বস্তনের কলকাতার বাড়িতে থাকতেন। বাড়ির সবাই তাকে সাদা চামড়া বলে যেমন সম্মান করতো তেমনি তাকে আপনও করেও নিয়েছিলো। কিন্তু মির্চা তাদের সে সম্মান রাখতে পারেননি। সে বাঙ্গালী উধ্বস্তনের কিশোরী মেয়েটি অর্থাৎ মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীকে ভালোবেসে ফেলেছিলো， মৈত্রেয়ীও তাকে ভালোবেসেছিলো। আর এ ভালোবাসা মোটেও প্লেটোনিক লাভ ছিলোনা， রগরগে রোমান্সে ভরা মানসিক এবং শারীরিক ভালোবাসা। উল্লেখ্ লা নুই বেঙ্গলী তথা বাংলার রাত এর নাম অনেক শুনেছি। এ ব্যাপারে যা জানতাম তা হলো， মির্চা এলিয়াদ অর্থাৎ এ বইয়ের লেখক কর্মসূত্রে তার উধ্বস্তনের কলকাতার বাড়িতে থাকতেন। বাড়ির সবাই তাকে সাদা চামড়া বলে যেমন সম্মান করতো তেমনি তাকে আপনও করেও নিয়েছিলো। কিন্তু মির্চা তাদের সে সম্মান রাখতে পারেননি। সে বাঙ্গালী উধ্বস্তনের কিশোরী মেয়েটি অর্থাৎ মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীকে ভালোবেসে ফেলেছিলো， মৈত্রেয়ীও তাকে ভালোবেসেছিলো। আর এ ভালোবাসা মোটেও প্লেটোনিক লাভ ছিলোনা， রগরগে রোমান্সে ভরা মানসিক এবং শারীরিক ভালোবাসা। উল্লেখ্য， ঘটনাটা বিংশ শতাব্দীর ২০-৩০ দশকের দিকে।কিন্তু তাদের ভালোবাসায় বাদ সাধলো মেয়েটির পরিবার। মির্চাকে একরকম তাড়িয়েই দেয়া হলো। তারপর কি হলো？ মির্চা কি তার জীবনের প্রথম ভালোবাসাকে ভুলতে পারলো？ যে মির্চা বাঙ্গালী নারীতে মজেছিলো নাকি সে ফিরে গেলো তার সংস্কৃতিতে？ ওদিকে মৈত্রেয়ীরই বা কি হলো？ সে কি মির্চাকে মনে মনে ভালোবেসেই আরেলজনের সংসার করে গেলো যুগের পর যুগ？ভেবেছিলাম এ প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর পাওয়া দিয়েই মন্ত্রমুগ্ধের মত ডুবে যাবো এ বিখ্যাত উপন্যাসটিতে （বা আত্মজীবনীতে）। কিন্তু আদতে সেরকম কিছু হলো না। শুরুতে অ্যালেন （গল্পে মির্চার নাম） তার কথার মধ্য দিয়ে প্রকাশ করেছে শ্বেতাঙ্গরা উপমহাদেশের মানুষকে কতটা তুচ্ছ ভাবে， সে নিজেও এর ব্যতিক্রম নয়৷ গল্পের সে মৈত্রেয়ীদের বাড়িতে থাকতে আসে এবং মৈত্রেয়ীর প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হয়। কিন্তু একজন শ্বেতাঙ্গ হয়ে একজন বাঙ্গালী নারীর প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হওয়াটাকে সে নিজেও ভালোভাবে নিতে পারছিলো না তা বোঝাই যাচ্ছিলো। এ জিনিসটা এত বেশী বার আমি বুঝতে পারছিলাম যে গল্পে মনোযোগ বসাতে আমাকে বেশ কষ্ট করতে হয়েছে। আর তাছাড়া কেন জানিনা， অ্যালেনকে আমার একজন সুযোগ সন্ধানী， স্বার্থপর মানুষ মনে হয়েছে যে আসলে তার অনুভূতি নিয়ে যথেষ্ট সন্দিহান। আর জিনিসটা বইয়ের একদম শেষাংশে জেনির ঘটনায় বোঝা যায়৷ আর তাছাড়া আগে থেকে শোনার প্রভাব কিনা জানিনা， তার ঘটনাগুলোর বর্ণনাতে অতিরিক্ত নাটুকেপনা আমার চোখে পড়েছে। বাস্তব ঘটনা এতটা নাটুকে হয় না， একটু রঙ চঙ মাখালে এমন হয় আর কি৷ যাই হোক， সব মিলিয়ে বইটা যতটা আশা নিয়ে ধরেছিলাম ততটা ভালো লাগেনি। 。。。more

În mare este o lectură ușoară si agreabilă。 Surprinzător， dar în același timp si interesant este modul in care Allan reușește să se integreze in noua cultură。 Mi se pare folositor faptul că se dau detalii din cultura respectivă și cititorilor， astfel aducând un plus de valoare la cultura generală a celor care au avut șansa sa citească textul lui Eliade。 Însă aș pune ca dezavantaj faptul că se insistă， mai mult de un sfert din carte， pe aspecte care poate nu contează la fel de mult și care pot st În mare este o lectură ușoară si agreabilă。 Surprinzător， dar în același timp si interesant este modul in care Allan reușește să se integreze in noua cultură。 Mi se pare folositor faptul că se dau detalii din cultura respectivă și cititorilor， astfel aducând un plus de valoare la cultura generală a celor care au avut șansa sa citească textul lui Eliade。 Însă aș pune ca dezavantaj faptul că se insistă， mai mult de un sfert din carte， pe aspecte care poate nu contează la fel de mult și care pot stârni dezgustul sau dezinteresul cititorului。 。。。more

In 1973， the venerable historian of religions Mircea Eliade was in his Chicago University office when he received an unannounced and decidedly unexpected visitor: the Indian poet Maitreyi Devi， who had been invited by the university to give a series of lectures on the Nobel Prize winning writer Rabindranath Tagore。 Devi was keen to look up Eliade as she had not seen him for decades – not since， in fact， he had been thrown out of her father’s house for conducting an inappropriate romantic affair In 1973， the venerable historian of religions Mircea Eliade was in his Chicago University office when he received an unannounced and decidedly unexpected visitor: the Indian poet Maitreyi Devi， who had been invited by the university to give a series of lectures on the Nobel Prize winning writer Rabindranath Tagore。 Devi was keen to look up Eliade as she had not seen him for decades – not since， in fact， he had been thrown out of her father’s house for conducting an inappropriate romantic affair with the teenage girl！ In the meantime， she had discovered that he had written a frank and revealing， if one-sided， account of the affair， loosely fictionalised， but using her real first name （whereas the male protagonist is called Alain and is French， not – like Eliade himself – Romanian）。 Oh， to have been a fly on the wall when Devi turned up at Eliade’s office！ Apparently， they met several times but the only record we have of their conversations is at the end of Devi’s own account of the affair （It Does Not Die）， written as a direct response to what she felt were Eliade’s fictional distortions of her character and behaviour。 Apparently， she made him promise that his book would never be published in English translation in her lifetime; and he kept his word: Catherine Spencer’s English translation （from the French translation of the Romanian original！） did not appear until 1994。 In the novel， a young engineer called Alain is sent by his company to Bengal， where the local boss befriends him; and， with a view to adopting him， lets him stay in his family home。 Alain， despite his prejudices about the native culture and people （“a hitherto unconscious notion of my superiority”）， soon starts to fall for the “enchantment” of both India and his boss’ teenage daughter Maitreyi。 Alain seems to be speaking for Eliade when he writes that he was “sure that the encounter of this ancient world with our modern work had yet to find its novelist。” If Alain is working on construction projects in the jungle， India is at the same time working on him; and， despite having to give up some of the personal freedoms of the European， Alain chooses to accept a “magical” life which no white man， he believes， “had ever experienced at source。” Alain at first thinks of himself as a civilised man among barbarians: When Maitreyi’s sister tells him that all trees have souls， he starts repeating to himself: Pantheism！ Pantheism！ But gradually his delusion of his own superiority weakens as his rationalist worldview encounters Maitreyi’s poetic， dreaming philosophy in which everyone has their own god。 He experiences their first， tentative intimacy as “that miracle of human ascent into the supernatural through touch and sight。” Their first kiss transports Alain into what Eliade often calls illud tempus， that once-upon-a-time when we are in the eternal present of the earthly paradise: “An unknown beatitude flooded every particle of my being and enraptured my body; in that plenitude， I recognized my truest self。 A wave of joy lifted me out of myself， without dividing or destroying me， or pushing me towards madness。 Never had I lived so immediately in the present as I did during those few minutes， when I seemed to live outside of all time。 That embrace was something much more than love。” The serpent in the garden （or snake in the parlour） is jealousy: Before Alain， Maitreyi has loved her guru and， like her sister， a tree。 Alain feels torn between wanting to become a Hindu himself， while acknowledging that they “all nurtured in the recesses of their beings a whole impenetrable history and mythology” which makes them “unintelligible” to him。 And one of the things that Alain does not understand is that for Maitreyi， their intimacy can only lead to marriage。 She has a ring created for Alain by a jeweller and swears by Mother Earth to be Alain’s alone; he feels horrified by her mystical exaltation， despite having tried to convince himself that he has eschewed the “common sense” of western civilisation。 He knows that he could never adopt the “sacrifice， renunciation， the complete acceptance of the will of fate” that a traditional Hindu marriage would entail。 But， as things turn out， he doesn’t have to: For anyone at all familiar with the real lives of the people on whom the fictional characters are based， it is not too much of a spoiler to say that， whether or not their relationship was true love， its course did not run smooth。 The fate of Alain as recounted in the novel， at least， is pretty much what happened to Eliade in real life， as recounted in his memoirs （Autobiography， Volume 1: 1907-1937， Journey East， Journey West）。 Feeling that his connection with ‘historical’ India had been short-circuited， he set off for a Himalayan ashram to practise yoga。 But once again “eternal māyā， in her blind wisdom，” intervened。 He got involved in tantric sex rituals with a South African cellist who was also staying there; but came to realise that he had let himself be deceived by his imagination。 As a result， he had lost his chance “to integrate ‘eternal，’ trans-historical India。” He realised that he could only pursue the Absolute once he had exhausted his creative potential as a writer and scholar: “My vocation was culture， not sainthood。” It was time to go home。 。。。more

O recitesc la 30 de ani dupa 15 ani de la prima lectura， dorind cu candoare sa imi amintesc de autorul care mi-a trezit interesul pentru lectura （prin Romanul adolescentului miop）。 Un mare rahat overrated。 Daca asta e cea mai buna poveste de dragoste romaneasca， atunci e nevoie urgent de una noua。 O viziune ridicola si infantila asupra iubirii， rasism cras， sexism pe masura， estetizarea sinuciderii。。。 o lectura absolut chinuitoare。。。

I read Maitrey's 'It Does not Die' as a response to Eliade's Bengal Nights' when completing my dissertation。 It's very difficult to rate （2。5） - on one hand， the racism， emphasis on white supremacy， and fetishization of the Indian/ Asian body is absolutely horrendous， I've wanted to throw the book against the wall countless times。 At the same time， Eliade's writing style wants to make you believe that it is a legitimate love story。 I can see why he got away with presenting it as a 'great love st I read Maitrey's 'It Does not Die' as a response to Eliade's Bengal Nights' when completing my dissertation。 It's very difficult to rate （2。5） - on one hand， the racism， emphasis on white supremacy， and fetishization of the Indian/ Asian body is absolutely horrendous， I've wanted to throw the book against the wall countless times。 At the same time， Eliade's writing style wants to make you believe that it is a legitimate love story。 I can see why he got away with presenting it as a 'great love story' when from Maitrey's 'It Does not Die' we find out that it was anything but a love story。 Eliade lives in a fantasy world where everything goes as he wants it and presents as Devi calls it a 'half-truth' to his readers。Only would recommend reading this perhaps after Devi's magnificent 'It Does not Die' but I wouldn't recommend it if you wanted to read it as a standalone。 One of my favourite quotes from Devi's 'It Does not Die' just to convince you:“Mircea， I am telling you， fantasy is beautiful and truth is more beautiful， but half-truth is terrible。 Your book is a nightmare for me。 I was a simple little girl who sometimes played philosopher。 I was no enigma。 The mystery is your creation。 You love the fantastic and unreal。 But now I have really come， to perform an impossible deed。” 。。。more

Am citit cartea asta destul de greu。 Nu pentru ca ar fi fost bogata in aforisme， in idei ce necesitau timp sa fie rumegate sau in replici care sa îmi dea de gândit， ci mai mult din plictiseala。 Da， de multe ori ma plictisea。 Poate stilul de jurnal， poate descrierile lungi sau misticismul exagerat sau poate toate pauzele de autojustificare ale personajului-narator。 Uneori mi se părea prea rapida și succinta in descrierea faptelor， alteori le prelungea excesiv。 Intre Allan și Maitreyi se naște o Am citit cartea asta destul de greu。 Nu pentru ca ar fi fost bogata in aforisme， in idei ce necesitau timp sa fie rumegate sau in replici care sa îmi dea de gândit， ci mai mult din plictiseala。 Da， de multe ori ma plictisea。 Poate stilul de jurnal， poate descrierile lungi sau misticismul exagerat sau poate toate pauzele de autojustificare ale personajului-narator。 Uneori mi se părea prea rapida și succinta in descrierea faptelor， alteori le prelungea excesiv。 Intre Allan și Maitreyi se naște o poveste de dragoste care se vrea mistica， atingând limitele inefabilului， pătrunzând pana la originea sufletelor celor doi îndrăgostiți， făcându-i sa uite de sine， de credințele și pasiunile lor ca indivizi。 Cartea este interesantă prin schimbările interioare are personajelor principale， prin comportamentul misterios și prin interpretările gesturilor， al cuvintelor fiecăruia。 Stilul de jurnal， cu însemnări și amintiri care regândite， mai apoi de narator， își schimbă semnificația， mi s-a părut sugestiv， chiar interesant， deși uneori greu se urmărit。 Sentimentele mele fata de Maitreyi sunt putin contradictorii。 Unele lucruri mi-au plăcut， pe altele le-am detestat， dar nu îmi pot da seama pe ce parte se înclina mai mult balanța。 Poate nu am înțeles cum trebuie simbolistica romanului， sau gândurile lui Eliade， de aceea aștept o explicație in momentul când îl vom studia la scoala， deși de multe ori， cartea îmi dădea impresia ca nu trebuie sa fie înțeleasă pe de-a întregul， ca vrea sa își păstreze o partea a misterului sau neatinsa。 M-a făcut， totuși， îndeajuns de curioasa încât sa îmi doresc sa citesc și răspunsul lui Maitreyi Devi la romanul lui Eliade。 。。。more

O sa incep prin a spune ca cea de-a doua steluta（prima o dau de default asa） e pentru anumite descrieri din carte， mai ales cele legate de cultura indiana si pentru potentialul pe care il avea aceasta。 Mai cartea nu ar fi fost rea， daca personajul principal nu era pedofil。 Povestea ar fi fost una chiar buna， KINDA SPOILER ALERT， o poveste de dragoste "tragica"， scrisa nu oribil， insa nu am putut empatiza absolut deloc cu personajele。 De ce？ Tocmai pentru ca acest Allen e un pedofil la vreo 25-30 O sa incep prin a spune ca cea de-a doua steluta（prima o dau de default asa） e pentru anumite descrieri din carte， mai ales cele legate de cultura indiana si pentru potentialul pe care il avea aceasta。 Mai cartea nu ar fi fost rea， daca personajul principal nu era pedofil。 Povestea ar fi fost una chiar buna， KINDA SPOILER ALERT， o poveste de dragoste "tragica"， scrisa nu oribil， insa nu am putut empatiza absolut deloc cu personajele。 De ce？ Tocmai pentru ca acest Allen e un pedofil la vreo 25-30 de ani care se indragosteste de o fata de 15-16 ani。 Si mai tare ma deranjeaza ca acest lucru e "romanticized" ca sa o dau pe englezisme， adica nu se pune deloc accent pe faptul ca relatia celor 2 personaje este gresita。Cu Allen nu am empatizat deloc si mi se pare evident faptul ca nu am empatizat cu el（daca empatizati cu pedofilu ala stati departe de mine）。 Pe parcursul cartii mi s-a facut mila de Maitreyi si tot ce am vazut in ea a fost aceasta "greseala" de a se "indragosti" de Allen。Ma sperie faptul ca povestea e inspirata de viata autorului。Concluzia ar fi ca hai sa scoatem mai tare in evidenta faptul ca personajul principal e un pedofil pentru ca nu e ok si mai putin "dragostea tragica" pup。 。。。more
